The DOC

A Pretty Dope Productions film

THEATRICAL RELEASE
SPRING 2023

Documentary “The DOC” recounts the story of Dallas rapper and songwriter The D.O.C., sharing his massive impact on hip-hop and rap music, and his lasting impression on artists to-date. The D.O.C. started his career with the group N.W.A., working alongside Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, DJ Yella, Ice Cube, and MC Ren. Writing lyrics and rapping with N.W.A., this documentary showcases never before seen footage and testimonials of The D.O.C.’s contribution to the group, and how his unique style began influencing rappers across the industry. Ready to start taking the stage on his own, The D.O.C. released his first solo album, “No One Can Do It Better” in 1989. As soon as he could get a taste of what his voice and lyricism would reward him with, everything was swiftly ripped away in what should have been a life-ending accident, permanently damaging his vocal cords. This severely impacted his rap career. Battling with the permanent loss of his voice, The D.O.C. channels his talent into the artists around him, and learns to find his new “voice” in life. While grappling with this lost-and-found over the next 30 years, an unexpected call from a California doctor presents a new unforeseen possibility, and D.O.C. is faced with yet another decision… What will his voice be now? Legends never die, and this one is still creating his legacy. We are so proud of this film, and are very moved and empowered by his story. It is an honor to share it with you all.

We want to thank everyone for their ongoing support, and for all who attended our World Premiere in June

“Overall, for audiences into hip hop, this is a must-watch. They will get a compelling story, a behind the scenes look into the creation of an era, insight into song creation and so much more. It’s full of engaging commentary from a swarm of amazing people he met in his life.

THE DOC sways to the dream that, no matter what you are dealing with or where you come from, anything is possible.”

-Luis De Leon

“Equating himself to the biblical Samson, whose hair gave him strength until it was unjustly stolen from him, Curry grapples with the devastating turn his life took at just 21 years old. Having known exactly what it was that he wanted to do from early on in life, how would anybody face the reality of it being ripped away in the blink of an eye?”

-Alex Papaioannou

“The DOC is an incredible talent and visionary who helped usher the hip-hop movement into mainstream America,”
